The fifth course in Prima Consulting’s popular Mine Safety and Health Training series is now live!

Mine Safety and Health Training - Surface Mining is an overview of the major safety issues pertaining to surface mines and quarries. It introduces the many hazards present on a mine site using NIOSH video clips of surface mining situations. While the mandates of the mining regulatory agencies are law in the US, they are also comprehensive enough to be considered best practice for mining in countries throughout the world.

Understanding Financial Statements of Mining Companies Under IASB and FASB Regulations

EduMine has launched a new course by SFU Senior Lecturer and chartered accountant Alain Duncan: Understanding Financial Statements of Mining Companies Under IASB and FASB Regulations.

This course is aimed at helping those who wish to read and interpret the financial statements of mining companies. It assumes the reader has no formal training or background in accounting but does have a general interest in business with a leaning towards mining.

Furthermore, this course assumes a managerial or investor approach rather than that of accountant or bookkeeper. We look at financial statements for their organization, information content and limitations. In short, you will not learn any bookkeeping or debits and credits but rather you will see numerical data and narrative-based descriptions prepared by mining companies.

Rock Mass Classification for Mine Design

Upon completion of the course the participants will be able to gather geotechnical data, either from rock cuts, drifts or core, and process the information for subsequent analysis. The focus of the course is towards gathering information for purposes of analysis and design. The goal is to use effective mapping techniques to obtain data can be used as input for any of the established rock classification systems. All of the commonly used classification values such as Barton’s Q and Q’ systems, Bieniawski’s RMR, Laubscher’s MRMR and Hoek’s GSI systems will be covered.

This course will include a half-day underground mapping and rock classification tour at Britannia Mine and as well as a half-day surface mapping and rock classification field trip on the outskirts of Vancouver.
