Mount Polley and Samarco: What Can We Do to Reduce the Chances of Another Tailings Disaster?

It has been two years since Mount Polley and nearly a year since Samarco. It has become apparent that Mount Polley had both design and management issues, while the jury is still out on the causes of failure at Samarco. So what has the industry done so far to reduce the chances of another tailings disaster? Recommendations regarding better site investigation procedures, and stricter adherence to tailings management procedures are obvious steps in the right direction. A more significant move in the right direction might

New Online Course – Tailings Management by Robert C. Lo

The consequences of tailings storage facility failure are significant, and there have been several failures in recent years. It is the responsibility of anyone involved in the design, construction, operation or closure of a tailings facility to be fully cognisant of every aspect of tailings management. Robert C. Lo’s new online course, Tailings Management, takes a comprehensive look at all aspects of tailings management–from tailings generation and storage facility design through operation to closure and decommissioning. For more info, see the course page.

Recent Tailings Failure at Samarco a Reminder of the Need for Proper Training

Tailings are a necessary component of mine waste. The safe design, operation and management of tailings facilities are key responsibilities of any modern mining operation. Following on the Mount Polley failure in British Columbia, Canada, in 2014, the recent tailings facility failure at the iron ore mine at Samarco in Brazil (MINING.com, 05 Nov), and the consequent loss of life, is yet another reminder of the need for proper training in all aspects of design, operation and management of tailings facilities. The upcoming EduMine course

Live Webcast – Tailings Management 101

This April, Kimberly Morrison (Morrison Geotechnical Solutions Inc.) and Todd Martin (BGC Engineering Inc.) will explore the concept of responsible tailings management as it pertains to the life cycle of a mine in their webcast, Tailings Management 101. Current trends in best practices in tailings management as embraced by leaders in the industry will be discussed, as will examples for preferred “environmentally friendly” solutions that also meet the technical and economical requirements for viable mining. This course is perfect for those responsible for the management,
